The course is designed to improve students' English proficiency in the professional field.

The main objective of the course is to develop students' communicative foreign language competence of oral and written communication in the professional field at the level of В1 according to the Pan-European scale of Linguistic Competence. The training is comprehensive and provides for the following tasks:

  • knowledge of relevant professional terminology (at least 500 lexical units);

  • improvement of communication skills;

  • familiarization with the methods and techniques of teaching the discipline in a foreign language.

Learning outcomes

In accordance with the requirements of the Additional education program, the development of the discipline is aimed at the formation of the following competencies (results of the development of additional education), including in accordance with the Federal State Educational Standard for Higher Education and professional standards, by Order of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of Russia dated 11.01.2011 No. 1n "On approval of the unified qualification directory of positions of managers, specialists and employees, section "Qualification characteristics of positions of managers and specialists of higher professional education and vocational training", the list of basic competencies of NPR TPU (Rector's order No. 110/od dated 28.10.2015).

General cultural competencies:

  • command of socio-cultural and intercultural communication skills that ensure the adequacy of social and professional contacts;
  • willingness to work in a team
  • ability to understand the social significance of one's profession, possess high motivation to perform professional activities.

General professional competencies: 

  • command of official, neutral and unofficial registers of communication;
  • knowledge of the conventions of speech communication in a foreign-speaking society, the rules and traditions of intercultural and professional communication with native speakers of the language being studied;
  • willingness to overcome the influence of stereotypes and to carry out intercultural dialogue in general and professional spheres of communication
  • command of ethical and moral norms of behavior accepted in a foreign cultural society;
  • ability to create and edit professional texts;
  • ability to represent the dynamics of the development of a chosen field of professional activity;
  • command of modern information and bibliographic culture.

Professional competencies:

  • ability to carry out intercultural communication in accordance with accepted norms and rules in various situations of intercultural exchanges;
  • willingness to work with major information retrieval systems.

The basic competencies, the formation of which is facilitated by mastering the substantive content of this academic discipline::

  • ability to organize the educational, research, project and professional activities of trainees in accordance with the planned learning outcomes;
  • ability to organize and conduct theoretical and experimental research within the framework of the subject of scientific areas of the structural unit;
  • ability to carry out communicative interaction with the professional community on the presentation of scientific research results.

As a result of mastering the discipline, students should achieve the following results:

  1. The ability and willingness to engage in oral communication on professionally significant topics within the framework of research activities carried out by the university, the ability to present educational material, solving other professionally significant tasks in a foreign language.
  2. The ability and willingness to engage in written communication on professionally significant topics, within the framework of research activities carried out by the university, the ability to present educational material and describe scientific achievements and results of ongoing projects, solving other professionally significant tasks.

Course duration – 12 weeks
Course complexity – 2 credits /72  hours
Form of control – graded credit (course is considered to be completed if a student scores 55 points or higher)
